'Lady Doritos' Isn't Happening, PepsiCo Says

If you were one of the people rolling their eyes at the thought of "Lady Doritos" last week, relax — PepsiCo announced Monday that it is not creating Doritos with a quieter crunch for women. This comes after Indra Nooyi, PepsiCo's CEO, said the company was creating a "low-crunch" chip for women.

Food critic Corby Kummer told Boston Public Radio Tuesday that he was surprised at Nooyi's remarks that initially sparked the internet furor surrounding this potential new product.

"She towed the line," he said, "to say this kind of ridiculous thing about women and snacks."

He was referring to Nooyi's statement on a Jan. 31 episode of the Freakonomics Radio podcast during which Nooyi said women do not eat Doritos the same way men do.

“A lot of the young guys eat the chips — they love their Doritos and lick their fingers with great glee," Nooyi said on the podcast. “Women, I think, would love to do the same, but they don’t. They don’t like to crunch too loudly in public. They don’t lick their fingers generously, and they don’t like to pour the little, broken pieces and the flavor into their mouth."

Kummer did suggest that Nooyi may have been basing her opinions on market research, and that "Lady Doritos" could actually be a big hit. But at the end of the day, Kummer thinks this boils down to one thing.

“It is good publicity," he said.
