The Samaritans: Suicide Prevention Group Turns 40

If you’ve never known anyone who’s taken their own life, you’re in the lucky minority. In the United States, the number of suicides each year has now surpassed the number of deaths from motor vehicle accidents. For 40 years now, it’s been the mission of The Samaritans to counsel people contemplating suicide. 

With just one telephone and 22 volunteers Monica Dickens, the granddaughter of Charles Dickens, founded The Samaritans here in Boston, and she says the phones began to ring almost immediately.
