Remembering Esther Earl, Inspiration For 'The Fault In Our Stars'

August 6, 2014

Some of the biggest books and movies aimed at young people in recent years have been rooted in fantasy: think "Twilight," "Harry Potter" and "The Hunger Games." But "The Fault In Ours Stars" deals with a hard truth of real life, telling the story of a teenage girl with cancer who falls in love with a boy she meets at a support group.

It’s fiction but was inspired by the true story of a girl from Massachusetts, Esther Grace Earl. Her mother, Lori, sat down with WGBH Arts Editor Jared Bowen to talk about her daughter's life, the movie and This Star Won't Go Out, the foundation the family has set up to help other families with children with cancer.
