Just as it's time to review the best Hollywood gave us in 2013, we can look to the stages in Boston for some great live performances.
Oscar Nominations 2014
The nominations have just been released. We'll discuss my expectations for these end-of-2013 films:
12 Years A Slave
August: Osage County
The Wolf of Wall Street
The Color Purple, presented by SpeakEasy Stage Company, it plays at the Calderwood Pavilion through February 8th. Based upon the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker, this sweeping saga tells the story of Celie, a young African-American woman living in rural Georgia in the early 1900's who overcomes tremendous odds to discover her own unique voice.
Venus in Fur, plays at the Huntington Theatre Company’s BU Theatre through February 2nd.
Chris Kipiniak makes his Huntington debut as Thomas, an ambitious director struggling to find the perfect actress to play the leading role in his new adaptation of the erotic novel, Venus in Furs by Leopold von Sacher-Mosoch. Andrea Syglowski plays Vanda, the actress who seduces her way into Thomas’s audition room, cast, and fantasies. This is a fun and dynamic romp (pun intended) of the play between sexes in a clever presentation of a play-within-a-play.
We Are Proud, plays at ArtsEmerson’s Paramount Center through February 1st.
A rehearsal room descends from collaborative to absurd as a group of idealistic actors attempts to dramatize the little-known first genocide of the 20th century. But as the ensemble wrestles with this remote story, tensions mount, and their exploration hits much closer to home than anyone ever expected. The personal and political, humorous and harrowing collide in this exhilaratingly irreverent play from Boston’s own Company One Theatre.
Coming up on Open Studio
I tour the expansive deCordova Biennial, a survey exhibition of New England’s contemporary artists and I welcome Lovely Hoffman to the studio for a conversation on her starring role in The Color Purple, playing at Speak Easy Stage Company. Also see a profile of artist Nick Cave and the mystical world he’s created.
